Yale Club of Tampa Bay History

According to the memories of the Historical Committee, our Club started in the fall of 1964 as the Bay Area Yale Club which was later changed to our present name to avoid conflict with that other Bay Area club on the west coast. A small group of founding members, including Walter Decker, Ted Griggs, Sid Miner, Leo Nagle, Frank Preston, John Thomas and Win Wight met sporadically, and called the first meeting with Win Wight being nominated and elected the first club President. After a long and extensive search of the archives, the following is a chronological list of Club Presidents to date: | |||

Activities of the early Club included spring break appearances of Yale singing groups, crew races, cocktail parties and dinner meetings. Over the years, the Club has had events involving the Yale Glee Club, the Bakers Dozen, the Spizzwinks, various Yale professors and Presidents including Yale's current President Richard E. Levin, as well as numerous local speakers at luncheons and dinners. In recent years, the Club has maintained regular luncheons in Clearwater, and periodic luncheons in St Petersburg and Tampa with announced speakers and/or programs of local interest. In addition, Club members participate in events scheduled by the Ivy League Club of Tampa Bay and for many years we've met with members of the Harvard Club for a luncheon and closed circuit broadcast of the Yale-Harvard football game. This comradeship has expanded into a Day at the Races at Tampa Downs where members of Yale, Princeton and Harvard get together to bet the "favorites." Of particular interest to many Club members is our participation in Yale's Community Summer Service program. This program, funded by Club members, compensate a student chosen by the University to spend eight weeks in our community in a local cause chosen by the Club. We have participated in this program for the past six years and the local cause has been the Sallie House, a safe haven for abandoned and abused children, sponsored by the Salvation Army in St. Petersburg. | |||
